For as long as I can
remember, music has been what made me tick. It was where I turned for comfort and
fulfillment. During the time we were searching for answers to what was happening to
Morgan. I would escape into my songwriting and singing, in order to gain
some sense of peace. There was none to be found.
We received the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder in 1997. Finally a name for
what was turning our family upside down. We were told how important early
intervention was, but finding that invention was yet another maze. Almost two years
past. Time seemed to be flying by and Morgan wasn't getting the help she needed.
One morning, following a week of what we call "Morgan's Bad Hair Days", I sent the
girls off to school and sat down for my devotional. I poured my heart out to God.
I was exhausted and at the end of my mental rope. I told God I was ready to do
whatever it would take to get my daughter back, I would lay down the music if that
was what He wanted me to do. God knew my heart and knew I meant it. I did a whole
lot of "I don't want to, but if you want me to". I realized that I had put the
creation (music) ahead of my Creator and I had to get my priorities back in order.
God heard my prayers. After that tearful, soul searching half hour, I opened my
devotional. The title for that date was "The Power Of Music". When I gave my music
to God, He gave it back to me. Right then I made a promise to make my music for
Him; to do it with a purpose.
Things fell right into place, as they always do, when we put the Kingdom first. We
knew we had to move because the help was not available where we lived. We prayed
every step of the way. We found out about Vanderbilt's TRIAD department, which
specializes in autism treatment. Rudy found a Job at a dealership in Nashville
which created a position for him and then held it until we could get there. Our
house sold in six weeks. Other houses in our neighborhood had been on the market
for more than a year. We were able to move during the summer. That gave us time to
settle before the new school.
John Rees, owner of GodsChild Records, offered for me to come on board with his
label after hearing some of my work. As it turned out, John's wife, Holly Lu, is a
warrior for special needs advocacy. She has given us a wealth of information and
support. A coincidence?...I doubt it! He and his family have been a real blessing.
Morgan is doing much better with the help she is receiving at Vanderbilt. Not all
days are perfect, but I'm glad they're in God's hands. And I'm finally finding
that
"peace that passes all understanding".
I know God has such a huge plan for our lives. Something bigger and better than we
can ever imagine. I watch Morgan's gift of joy, and how she goes to a place in
people's hearts that I can't. I wouldn't trade the trials because of the
relationship I have found with God through them. I'm so thankful He picked me to
care for one of His Blue Roses.
