Hello,
I hope this finds everyone well. Summer is almost here. It’s time to
kick back, enjoy the family, and join us when you can. Here's the
latest:
News:
We just finished celebrating our Seventh Annual Breaking The Chains
Round for autism awareness. This year our daughter Morgan opened the
round, and it was a real treat for me, as well as the audience. I think
she’s inherited a little bit of mom’s “ham” gene. She did a great job.
Many thanks to the performers on both rounds. It was a wonderful night.
$1610.00 was raised for the Autism Society of Middle Tennessee. WooHoo!!
"Breaking The Chains" is available on
CD Baby. It's an acoustic collection of songs, from our
family to yours, dedicated to the autism community. A portion of all
proceeds will be donated to the
Autism Society of America's Middle Tennessee Chapter.

The Country Music Hall of Fame has been offering
the Words and Music Program to local area schools for thirty plus years.
It is an educational program that teaches children some of the basics of
songwriting. At the teacher's request, a lesson plan is sent, and as
part of the course, children write lyrics which are given to a
songwriter to complete and add music. The children come and tour the
museum, and hear their songs performed.
I have been a volunteer with the Words and Music Program for the past
four years. Until now the program has only been offered in the
mainstream classroom. As a personal project for the MIND program at
Vanderbilt, I thought it would be fun to do the program with a group of
students with special needs.
Thanks to Elise McMillan and John Paul II High School, I found a great
group of students. With the help of fellow songwriter Steve Nelson and
their teacher, Adrienne Parks, things fell right into place. Steve and I
attended six sessions. Adrienne knows her students well. She presented
the lesson concepts in a way that was fun and engaging. We found out
that Hannah Montana was one of their favorite artists, so Steve had the
idea to break down the song "Nobody's Perfect" written by: Gerrard,
Matthew, Nevil, and Robbie. This was very motivating for the students,
and educational for us "older writers".
Once the students understood the nuts and bolts, we spent some one on
one time writing down their main ideas to get the "hook". Then we asked
lots of questions to get the meat of the song. One of my favorite
moments was with a student named Rachel Putnam. Her song title was "I Am
Going to School". As we were fleshing out the words to the chorus, she
leaned over and said "I'm hearing a beat", spoken like a true
songwriter. She sang the melody of the first line she was hearing, and
that helped drive the song the rest of the way home. Steve and I
gathered the lyrics and musical ideas and took them home to complete. We
met the students at The Hall of Fame on their field trip the following
week to perform the songs. Will McMillan and Steve Nelson had a very
inspirational tune, "Never Give Up", that was a favorite of the class.
This was a wonderful experience, and I hope the students enjoyed it as
much as we did. One of the peers, Rachel Smolen, also shared some
thoughts with me that touched my heart, and we finished writing the song
through email. She told how her friends had made an impact on her life
and her future plans. Speaking of future plans, the Hall of Fame now
plans to continue offering the program to a special needs class each
year. Steve and I have already signed up and are looking forward to
meeting some new co-writers.
Until Next Time,
Know The Hope,
